Watching My World Burn

A small crew, a big story

Picturesque mountains against warm fires and open conversation—on-screen, it feels effortless. Off-screen, it was anything but.

This project was led by Joseph, one of the founders of Arrival Creative, who produced, directed, and edited the film. With the location being so remote—about a 12-hour drive from the capital city after flying in—the crew stayed intentionally small: Joseph and an assistant.

Wearing multiple hats

On many film sets, those responsibilities would be distributed across multiple roles: director, cinematographer, producer, sound mixer, camera operator. Here, the constraints (distance, budget, and a narrow filming window) meant a two-person team had to cover the full spread.

Earning trust in a compressed timeframe

Filming took place over the course of a few days, with only one full day available to film with Enkjin. We hadn’t met Enkjin or heard the story directly prior to landing—so the first priority wasn’t “get the shot.” It was building rapport quickly enough that the camera could eventually fade into the background.

Enkjin’s schedule was demanding, which meant short windows and constant adaptation. And because the story involves the death of Enkjin’s mother—and the way Enkjin has learned to live beyond that loss—sensitivity wasn’t optional. The work had to move fast without ever feeling rushed.

The cold that changes everything

Temperatures dropped to around –30°, colder than Joseph had ever filmed in. (Fun fact: –39° is where Fahrenheit and Celsius meet.) Cold like that changes everything—pace, endurance, and even how equipment behaves.

The result

In the final cut, none of the technical strain is evident. What you feel instead is connection with someone you’ve never met—and that was the goal of this film.
